Harriet Manners knows a lot of things. She knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a "jiffy" lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. What she isn't quite so sure about is why nobody at school seems to like her very much. So when she's spotted by a top model agent, Harriet grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her Best Friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of the impossibly handsome supermodel Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.
As Harriet veers from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, she begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did. And as her old life starts to fall apart, the question is: will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?
my thoughts
Geek Girl was everything I had expected it to be, but about a million times more adorable. Honestly, if you would look up "adorable" in a dictionary, you would probably find this book. Same goes for "cute", "fluffy" and "funny". But don't let all the fluffiness fool (which according to Harriet, is where the word "geek" comes from. So yes, pun intended) you: there is also some substance and a lesson to be learned. Not to mention the fact that geeks all over the world will be charmed by and be able to relate to Harriet Manners. I definitely was.
What made this book stand out for me, was that it could have been a total cliché. If you add all the different parts of this story up you could roll your eyes and move on with your day. But somehow, Smale made it work. Yes, we have the geeky girl, the loyal best friend, the mean girl, the handsome boy, the sudden dream come true... but both the fact that it was hilarious and the brilliant main character made this story worthwile. It's bound to make you feel good. And laugh, a lot.
Harriet was a lovely character. She was both quirky and endearing, and I loved being inside her head. At times, I felt like bit like a Harriet Manners myself. (In her words, she has "a tendency to correct people's grammar and tell them random facts they're not interested in". Hi, that's me.) Yes, she talks a lot about these random facts. But instead of coming across as a know-it-all, it suited her. I loved how she described normal things in a geeky way, like:

But instead of coming across as a know-it-all, it suited her. I loved how she described normal things in a geeky way, like:
"It takes an interaction of seventy-two different muscles to produce human speech, and right now not a single one of them is working."and:
"A human heart is supposed to beat between sixty and ninety times a minute, while resting. A hedgehog's heart beats up to 300 times a minute when standing still. Honestly, I think I might be turning into a hedgehog."
I didn't like the other characters as much as I liked Harriet, but all of them were just as unique. And most of them were, in Harriet's words "completely bonkers". (I'm looking at you, Wilbur.) I wasn't a fan of the romance, mostly because I never felt like it was necessary for the story - Harriet was brilliant enough, after all. But for the sake of the targeted age group, I will say it was sweet. I am a fan of Toby, Harriet's stalker, who took his job very seriously and spent most of his time in the bushes outside Harriet's house taking notes of her schedule. Hilarious.
The plot was a little predictable, but that didn't make me enjoy it any less. It made me laugh out loud despite being ridiculous at times and made me feel warm inside the entire time. Plus, it provides a great lesson for girls everywhere (no matter what age you are!). I would definitely recommend this book to all younger readers and anyone who needs a light, quick, can't-help-but-smile-while-reading read. Geek Girl is fun, quirky and mostly: adorable.

memorable quotes
Taken from the ARC.
"Nobody hopped into a wardrobe to find Narnia; they hopped in, thinking it was just a wardrobe. They didn't climb up the Faraway Tree, knowing it was a Faraway Tree; they thought it was just a really big tree. Harry Potter thought he was a normal boy; Mary Poppins was supposed to be a regular nanny.
It's the first and only rule. Magic comes when you're not looking for it."
"This might surprise you, but here's a fact: people who plan things thoroughly aren't particularly connected with reality. It seems like they are, but they're not: they're focusing on making things bit-size, instead of having to look at the whole picture. It's procrastination in its purest form because it convinces everyone - including the person who's doing it - that they are very sensible and in touch with reality when they're not. They're obsessed with cutting it up into little pieces so they can pretend that it's not there at all."
"'Are we definitely set on the name Harriet?'
We all look at him in shock because... well, it's my name. I've been sort of set on it for the last fifteen years."

After reading the synopsis I was unsure about this book. I like when people embrace who they are so I was a little scared it was going to be another story about getting to be popular and adored but all. I'm glad that after reading your review that my assumptions don't seem to be the case. I'm glad that this didn't turn out to be the cliché story it could have been.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's obviously a little cliché. But it was just so adorable I didn't care, and the MC was great :)
DeleteThis one sounds fun! Harriet sounds A LOT like my daughter. :) Sorry the romance didn't quite live up though, I'm a sucker for a good romance.
ReplyDeleteHaha, you must have a very smart daughter! I am too, but this book didn't need romance, so I wasn't a fan of it ;)
DeleteThis books sounds refreshing and quirky. Never heard of it or of the author before. Thanks for the review! With all the death and doom and dystopia out there, this sounds like it could be a fun break from having to think about what I would do with my deadly superpowers :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a debut novel! If you're ever need a break from all the destruction out there, you should definitely give this book a shot :)
DeleteOkay, so I totally do this, too: "a tendency to correct people's grammar and tell them random facts they're not interested in." I love rambling on statistics and random numbers but apparently, I suck at Math.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, Geek Girl sounds just the book I need to read. I requested it on NG but I guess I just needed a little push to start reading it. Also, I'm still not over the awesomeness that is The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and kind of nervous to start book 2.

Haha, I think there's a lot of geeks out here. I'm terrible at correcting people's grammar - it always seems to annoy them. I hope you decide to pick this book up. It's very cute :) Ha, good luck with that! Book 2 is WORSE. Or better, depending on how you look at it. Enjoy!
DeleteI think I can really identify myself with Harriet, she sounds adorable! I always have a weakness for geeks :p The way the random facts are used is so subtle, I love it.
ReplyDeleteMe too haha. And that was exactly what I loved about her :)
DeleteWhile it's a shame the romance was a little forced and some of the other characters weren't great, this does sound really cute and fun. It's good to know this book is more suited toward younger YA readers, since I like to be aware of that before I start reading.
ReplyDeleteExactly! While I didn't get a heads-up about that, it was clear from the very first page that it's also meant for a younger audience. That didn't make me enjoy it any less, but it did make me more open-minded about it :)
DeleteOoh, I'm glad you reviewed this because it was a really great read! I loved the humor in this, I had so many laugh out loud moments! I didn't know it was meant for younger readers! Oh well, I enjoyed it nonetheless, which it a testament to my childishness I suppose :) Great review!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's 11+ but I think it's a book everyone could (and probably should) read. I remember now that you were the one who actually introduced me to this book, Alise! And I also thought it was hilarious :)
DeleteI recently requested it, and I immediately regretted my decision. I was afraid it would be another cliche book. According to your review though, I have more to look forward too. So thanks.
ReplyDeleteI hope you decide to check it out soon :) I really enjoyed it!
DeleteI've been wanting to check out this book because it sounded so cute, and I'm really pleased to read you liked it! It sounds like exactly my kind of book and anything that celebrates geekery is something I have to check out. I think I'm in need of more books that make me laugh, too! Thanks so much for the great review - really helped me get a feel for what to expect and I'll definitely be reading this book :)
ReplyDeleteAw, I'm glad I could help with that :) It's just such a fun, quirky read and I hope you enjoy it!!
DeleteThis sounds like a super cute book! Perhaps I'll have to take the time to check this one out ;)
ReplyDeleteIt really is :) I hope you'll check it out too!
DeleteThis sounds adorable!
ReplyDeleteIt's so cute :)
DeleteI felt the exact same way about this book! Loved, loved, loved it so much! And it came totally unexpected! I really think more people should know about Geek Girl ;)
ReplyDeleteI definitely loved it, and it surprised me too. I think it's the perfect book for everyone who needs a lighter, heartwarming read :) Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteCan I tell you? I went to the launch party for this and Holly Smale is JUST AS ADORABLE as I imagine Harriet to be. I think that probably made the book even cuter for me. But in any case, I totally agree about the romance. Not so necessary. But Toby creeped me out a lot. Kind of unsettling. It was less unsettling later on when it looked like they might actually be friends/we realize he's just looking for camaraderie, but at the beginning it was WEIRD. >.<
ReplyDeleteAwww I wish I could have met her! This book was just very cute :) Haha, I loved how weird he was. It WAS unsettling, but it also made me laugh.
